33-1/2" Star Cross Four-Wing Cable Tool Bit

Mifflinburg, PA Warehouse @ EWD Yard

Description

  • 33-1/2" Star Cross Four-Wing Cable Tool Bit
  • For cable tool drilling 6" diameter holes in clay and other geological formations. 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" male thread.
  • Around 33-1/2" length.
  • A regular bit, from a worm's eye view, looks like an H with the sides bent in a circle.
  • This gives star bits four cutting edges rather than the two on a regular bit, though they are smaller.
  • The design of a star bit helps it drill straighter in slanted formations.
  • For extreme conditions, manufacturers can also twist star bits just like regular bits.
  • Again, we would want a right-hand twist to use with left-lay drilling line.
  • Star bits, despite their construction, weigh just about the same as a regular drill bit of the same length.
  • Distance across the four wings is just about the same as the body diameter of a regular bit.
  • Although a special purpose bit, drillers could use it every day in some geologies and conditions.
  • Presumably American manufactured with carbon and/or alloy steels, but unsure if this is Acme, Spang, Gill Rock Drill, Ideco, Trident, Rampp, O.W.S. Co., Keystone or maybe another historical tooling manufacturer.
  • If you require thread protector(s) on tool joint(s) add another $15.
  • Located in Mifflinburg, PA USA
